Noodlebib, the popular citation software that is used by many SRJC instructors, is making changes to its interface. These new changes will occur on June 25, 2012. Here is a highlight of some of the changes, courtesy of Molly Matheson, SRJC Librarian and Instructor:

More source types are available including source types for twitter, mobile apps, youtube and, after consultation with APA, NoodleBib will now provide Wikipedia entries in APA style

When students choose a source type they will see “Show Me” tutorials for visual examples of the source type along with evaluation tools

Students can change a list from APA to MLA or Chicago or any combination of changes–once changed a screen comes up to inform students what fields may need to be corrected, added etc. based on the change

Students can change from one source to another (magazine to journal for example) without losing what’s already been entered–or from print to database.

Students can copy and paste (not download) from the pre-set citation formatting in certain databases and fields will be pre-populated

Students can use Worldcat to gather citation information and pre-populate fields

The “Check for Errors” button has been eliminated. Instead, if there are mistakes within a field, a yellow warning triangle will appear next to that field

The order that information about a source is entered has changed to follow the concept of part and whole: article information is entered first, then information about the magazine (part then whole)–similar for book chapters and books, etc.

URLs can be omitted for final printed versions of Works Cited in MLA but included in the record for further reference

Individual entries can be omitted from final versions of the printed bibliography/Works Cited, etc.

Three versions will available for students: 1) Starter (elementary school level), 2) Junior (middle school) and 3) Advanced (college and beyond). Students can move back and forth between these levels without losing any data

Students can archive web sources in iCyte

Better integrated with iPads is to be released by the end of this summer

The SRJC Libraries are in a constant state of communication! With as many as 7,000 students attending the libraries on any given day in a semester, the Doyle and Mahoney Libraries have lots to tell their patrons. “We send out notices to students when books they need become available, when items are overdue, and when they owe money for late fees,” explains Cathleen Cummings, Lead Circulation Technician, Doyle Library.

Dr. Cherry Li-Bugg, Dean of Learning Resources, asked the library team to look for a sustainable solution. Through the combined efforts of library staff at the five service desks, the helpful support of the IT Department, and the programming talents of Sunny Xie, the SRJC Libraries are transitioning to a paperless messaging system. “This switch to email notification not only helps the library contribute to SRJC sustainability initiatives, it also makes it easier for students to manage their library materials. As soon as they get the message they can pick up items, return books, or go online and pay fines before they add up,” says Linda Perkins, Lead Circulation Technician, Mahoney Library. This project will save about 12,000 pieces of paper a year.
